Student Services and Facilities
 

Virginia State University is committed to fostering a supportive, inclusive, and engaging campus environment that promotes student success inside and outside of the classroom. The University offers a wide range of student services and facilities designed to enhance academic achievement, personal development, well-being, and community engagement.

Academic Support Services

To empower students in reaching their academic goals, VSU provides a comprehensive suite of support services:

  • Academic Center for Excellence (ACE)
    • Academic Advising through the University College and departmental advisors
    • University Tutoring and Writing Centers for subject-specific and general academic assistance
  • Office of Student Accessibility Services (OSAS) for students with documented disabilities

  • TRIO and other federally funded programs at VSU to enhance retention and graduation for first-generation and underrepresented students

Career and Professional Development

The Office of Career Services offers individualized career counseling, resume development, job and internship search assistance, career fairs, and graduate school preparation. Students are encouraged to participate in professional development workshops and connect with VSU’s robust employer network.

Counseling and Wellness

The University Counseling Center provides confidential mental health services, including individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and wellness education. The Health and Wellness Center offers primary health care, immunizations, health screenings, and referrals to off-campus providers when necessary.

Residential Life and Housing

Living on campus is an essential part of the Trojan experience. Residential Life and Housing fosters community through safe, inclusive living environments and student engagement programs. Various residential options are available to meet the needs of a diverse student body.

Campus Dining

At VSU, Dining Services offers a variety of dining options across campus that cater to diverse dietary needs and preferences. Meal plans are available to all students, with flexible options that promote both convenience and nutritional wellness. 

Student Engagement and Leadership

The Division of Student Affairs oversees numerous opportunities for student involvement through registered student organizations (RSOs), fraternities and sororities, leadership development programs, civic engagement, and multicultural affairs. Students are encouraged to explore their interests and develop leadership skills through active participation.

Recreational Facilities

Recreation and Leisure Services offer fitness programs, intramural sports, and wellness activities. Students have access to a modern fitness center, walking trails, athletic fields, and a variety of recreational events throughout the year. Student Activities hosts a number of events for students in Foster Hall, also.

Transportation and Campus Safety

VSU offers campus shuttle services and transportation support for student activities. VSU Police Department along with the Campus Safety Office ensures a safe and secure learning environment through 24/7 patrol, emergency response, and community-oriented policing.

Other Services Offered Include:

  • VSU Alumni Association - fosters lifelong engagement and support between Virginia State University and its alumni community. Through networking, mentoring, and philanthropic initiatives, alumni remain connected and contribute to the success of future Trojans.
  • Department of Athletics - Virginia State University competes in NCAA Division II as a member of the CIAA. The Department of Athletics offers a range of men's and women's sports and promotes excellence, sportsmanship, and school spirit across the campus community.
  • Parking Enforcement Division - manages vehicle registration and parking enforcement on campus. Designated lots and permits ensure safe and accessible parking for students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
  • International Student Advisement - provides specialized advising, cultural adjustment support, and immigration guidance to ensure international students thrive academically and socially at VSU.
  • National Student Exchange - offers students the opportunity to study at partner universities across the United States and its territories, providing academic diversity and cultural enrichment without leaving the country.
  • New Student Orientation - Trojan Introduction Program (TIP) - welcomes new students and their families to the Trojan community through orientation programming focused on academic expectations, student life, campus resources, and transitional support.
  • Office of Financial Aid - assists students in identifying and securing financial resources, including federal and state aid, scholarships, grants, and work-study opportunities.
  • Office of International Education - supports global engagement through study abroad programs, international partnerships, and cross-cultural learning initiatives that expand students’ worldviews and academic experiences.
  • Sexual Assault Prevention - promotes a culture of consent and respect through education, advocacy, and campus-wide iniatives. Support services are available for survivors, including confidential counseling and reporting resources.
  • Student Government Association (SGA) - the official representative body of the undergraduate student population, advocating for student interests, allocating resources, and fostering dialogue between students and administration.
  • Substance Abuse Prevention - raise awareness through education and outreach initiatives about the risks of alcohol and drug use. Support services are available to help students make informed decisions and access resources when needed.
  • Trojan Card Office - the official VSU student ID, providing access to campus buildings, dining services, library resources, and university-sponsored events, as well as TrojanCard account purchases.
  • University Libraries - The Johnston Memorial Library and online collections provide access to academic resources, research assistance, study spaces, and technology to support scholarly achievement across disciplines.
  • Veterans Affairs and Veteran Student Advisement - supports military-connected students with academic advising, VA benefits coordination, and transition assistance, ensuring a smooth integration into the university community.
  • VSU Bookstore - offers textbooks, school supplies, university apparel, and convenience items. Online ordering and textbook rental options are also available.

Several services and programs are available to graduate students through the College of Graduate Studies Office. An orientation program is offered each year in cooperation with this office to acquaint new graduate students with services and facilities.
