NURS 100. Introduction To Nursing. (6 Credits)

This course introduces the learner to safe and effective nursing care through the conceptual domains of client, healthcare systems, and nursing practice. Clinical laboratory will focus on integration of psychomotor skills through the use of simulation and inpatient care settings across the life span. Upon completion, students will be able to provide safe nursing care incorporating the concepts identified in this course. Prerequisite: Admission into the clinical phase Co requisite: NURS 101.

NURS 101. Explorations in Nursing. (2 Credits)

This course introduces the learner to the nursing major. Discussion will include orientation to nursing as a profession, the healthcare system, study skills, time management, medical terminology, and critical thinking. Prerequisite: Admission into the clinical phase of the program or permission of the department.

NURS 110. Pharmacology For Nursing. (3 Credits)

This course will focus on the basic concepts of pharmacology with emphasis on safe drug administration. There is continues concentration on the conceptual domains of the client, healthcare systems, and nursing practice. Prerequisite: MATH 120, admission into the clinical phase or permission of the department Co requisite: NURS 150.

NURS 150. Principles Of Nursing I. (6 Credits)

This course further develops the conceptual domains of client, healthcare systems and nursing practice that were introduced in NURS 100. Clinical laboratory will focus on psychomotor skills, psychosocial interventions, and the role of the nurse through the use of simulation and inpatient care settings. Upon completion, students will be able to provide safe nursing care incorporating the concepts identified in this course. Prerequisite: NURS 100, NURS 101, admission into the clinical phase Co requisite: NURS 110.

NURS 199. Focused Topics in Nursing. (3-6 Credits)

This is a special topics course for students who are unsuccessful in the previous clinical nursing course. The course will present essential concepts for success in the next nursing course. The course will include concepts and psychomotor skills. Students will have the opportunity for practice in the simulation and in selected situations, in the off campus clinical environment. Prerequisite: Permission of department.

NURS 200. Individualized Nursing Studies. (6 Credits)

This course is designed to prepare students for an immersive learning experience within the Virginia Community College System (VCCS), demonstrating competency in a pre-licensure nursing program. Through supervised instruction, students will engage in hands-on learning in nursing readiness, and exploration of strategies for engaging in concept-based nursing education. This course focuses on developing critical thinking skills and clinical reasoning to enhance their readiness for professional nursing practice. NURS 250. Dimensions of Nursing. (2 Credits)

This seminar course will focus on contemporary factors affecting the conceptual domains of client, healthcare systems and nursing practice. Prerequisite: NURS 100, NURS 101, NURS 110, NURS 150, and admission into the clinical phase Co requisite: NURS 252.

NURS 252. Principles Of Nursing II. (8 Credits)

This course advances the conceptual domains of client, healthcare systems and nursing practice. Clinical laboratory will focus on family health care through the use of simulation, inpatient, and community health settings. Upon completion, students will be able to provide safe nursing care incorporating the concepts identified in this course. Prerequisite: NURS 100, NURS 101, NURS 110, NURS 150, and admission into the clinical phase Co requisite: NURS 250.

NURS 255. Principles of Nursing III. (8 Credits)

This course culminates the focus of the conceptual domains of client, healthcare systems and nursing practice. Clinical laboratory will focus on the assimilation of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for delivery of safe and effective nursing care. Upon completion, students will be able to provide safe nursing care incorporating the concepts identified in this course. Prerequisite: NURS 100, NURS 101, NURS 110, NURS 150, NURS 250, NURS 252, and admission into the clinical phase Co requisite: NURS 256.

NURS 256. The Practice Of Nursing. (2 Credits)

This capstone nursing seminar course will prepare the learner for transition into entry level nursing practice with an emphasis on NCLEX-RN examination preparation. Prerequisite: NURS 100, NURS 101, NURS 110, NURS 150, NURS 250, NURS 252 and admission into the clinical phase Co requisite: NURS 255.

NURS 300. Individualized Nursing Studies. (6 Credits)

This course is designed to reinforce students’ knowledge and skills essential for the successful completion of the pre-licensure nursing program. This course serves as a bridge to the online RN to BSN completion program, providing focused preparation for the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) and professional development mentoring. Students will participate in a variety of activities, workshops, and projects to reinforce their readiness for professional nursing practice. The course aims to provide a seamless transition into advanced nursing education and practice. This course introduces the RN to the role of the baccalaureate prepared nurse generalist. Through an examination of values, ethics, and practice standards, the Registered Nurse (RN) will promote competencies for safe and effective nursing care. The course will provide the foundation for professional practice. Prerequisite: Admissions to the program.

NURS 321. Integrated Health Assessment. (3 Credits)

This course focuses on comprehensive health assessment. Assessment skills are applied to the practice of nursing across the lifespan. The focus is on assessing cultural, psychosocial, behavioral, physiological, and spiritual health parameters to maintain homeostasis. Pharmacological principles essential to promoting clinical reasoning will be examine. Laboratory experiences are provided for comprehensive skill acquisition. Prerequisite: Admissions to the program.

NURS 322. Theoretical Foundations. (3 Credits)

NURS 322 Theoretical Foundations - 3 semester hours This course reviews models, concepts, and theories that serve as the basis for professional nursing. The RN will demonstrate an understanding of nursing theorists approach to patient centered care across the lifespan in diverse settings. Historical, legal, cultural, economic and social factors that affect nursing and healthcare delivery are analyzed. The RN will develop a framework for future nursing practice. Prerequisite: Admissions to the program.

NURS 323. Healthcare Trends & Policy. (3 Credits)

This course introduces the RN to contemporary changes in the internal and external environment affecting nursing practice. The RN will examine trends in healthcare and regulatory policies to establish an appreciation of factors influencing professional practice in a global society. Prerequisite: NURS 320.

NURS 324. Evidence-based Practice. (3 Credits)

NURS 324 Evidence-based Practice - 3 semester hours This course serves as the foundation for the use of the research process to critically analyze research studies. Through an introduction to the language and skills of evidence-based nursing practice, the RN student will focus on qualitative, quantitative, and mixed methods designs. Through an exploration of current and past studies, the RN student is introduced to the use of data as the basis for decision making in the healthcare environment. Prerequisite(s): NURS 320, NURS 321, NURS 322.

NURS 420. Alterations in Health. (3 Credits)

This course focuses on the wellness-illness continuum across the lifespan with an emphasis on disease processes and the body's response to illness, Principles of genetics and genomics in relation to health are examined. Disease prevention, early diagnosing and rehabilitation strategies are analyzed to achieve optimal outcomes among individuals, families and groups. Prerequisite: NURS 323, 324.

NURS 421. Nursing Informatics. (3 Credits)

This course explores the use of informatics within healthcare delivery systems. An examination of electronic health records management, practice standards, and data analysis will prepare the RN to utilize informatics within the dynamic healthcare environment. Policies promoting the appropriate use of social media in healthcare will be discussed. Prerequisite: NURS 323, 324.

NURS 422. Population & Global Health. (3 Credits)

This course will emphazie health promotion and disease prevention within communities. The communities consist of individuals, families, groups, and societies within a local, state, national, or international setting. The focus is on formulating strategies to improve patient care outcomes. Principles of epidemiology within vulnerable populations will be highlighted. Community based social justice, cultural sensitivity, health disparities and equity of care will be addressed. Prerequisite: 323, 324.

NURS 423. Leadership & Healthcare Mgmt. (3 Credits)

This course focuses on evidence-based leadership and managment theories, principles, and models. The RN will analyze current practices related to the leadership role within healthcare systems. Interdisciplinary team communication and collaboration across disciplines will be examined. Quality management and safety of patient centered care will be emphasized. Prerequisites: NURS 420, 421, 422.

NURS 424. Fin Mgmt & Health Delivery Sys. (3 Credits)

This course examines the effects of social, cultural, economic, legal and political factors affecting healthcare delivery and practice. Resources and best practice methods for financing healths services are identified. Healthcare reimbursement principles as related to the delivery of cost effective healthcare services in a variety of settings will be discussed. Legislative processes on the state and national level are examined.\ Prerequisite: NURS 420, 421, 422.
