MUSE: Music Ensemble (MUSE)

MUSE 101. Concert Band. (1 Credit)

Large wind and percussion ensemble that rehearses and performs works from the wind band repertoire. Students of all majors are encouraged to audition for this ensemble.

MUSE 102. Wind Symphony. (1 Credit)

Wind and percussion ensemble that performs classic and modern wind ensemble compositions. This is the primary ensemble for wind and percussion music majors and is also open to excellent players in other majors through an audition.

MUSE 105. Marching Band. (1 Credit)

The VSU Trojan Explosion marching band performs at football games and other events. Participation in this ensemble is open to all VSU students through an audition. Participation requires a rigorous rehearsal schedule and frequent travel.

MUSE 107. Symphony Orchestra. (1 Credit)

As a collaboration between VSU and the Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, the Symphony Orchestra includes rehearsals and performances with the PSO. It is the primary ensemble for music majors in strings. It is open to all VSU students through an audition.

The String Ensemble performs works written for string orchestra and chamber strings. It is open to all VSU students through an audition.

Full choir that performs a variety of choral works from classical to contemporary. The concert choir is the primary ensemble for music majors in voice. It is open to all VSU students through an audition.

MUSE 112. Chamber Choir. (1 Credit)

Smaller choral ensemble that performs music from a variety of chamber choir repertoire. This ensemble is open to music majors and to excellent singers from other majors through an audition.

MUSE 115. Gospel Chorale. (1 Credit)

The VSU Gospel Chorale is a registered student organization with the mission to provide gospel music for the university and community. VSU Gospel Chorale activities include public concerts, touring, church events, recording sessions, and University ceremonies.

MUSE 120. Jazz Ensemble. (1 Credit)

Full jazz band that performs jazz of various styles, from classics and contemporary compositions. It is the primary ensemble for students in the Jazz Studies major and is available to other students through an audition.

MUSE 122. Jazz Combo. (1 Credit)

Small jazz groups that perform works from the small-group repertoire as well as contemporary and original compositions.

MUSE 130. Woodwind Ensemble. (1 Credit)

Ensemble for music major students in woodwind applied study.

MUSE 131. Brass Ensemble. (1 Credit)

Ensemble for music major students in brass applied study.

MUSE 132. Percussion Ensemble. (1 Credit)

Ensemble for music major students in percussion applied study.

MUSE 135. Chamber Music Ensemble. (1 Credit)

Ensemble for music major students in strings and keyboard applied study, and other instruments as needed, performing pieces from the chamber music repertoire.

MUSE 140. Live Music Ensemble. (1 Credit)

Ensemble of instrumentalists and vocalists that performs classic and contemporary songs from popular music genres. This group provides entertainment for events on and off campus. It is available to all students through an audition.

MUSE 145. Recording Studio Musicianship. (1 Credit)

Ensemble that focuses on performance practices in the recording studio environment. Students learn to work with lead sheets, DAWs, click tracks, arranging, recording, and other techniques essential to studio.
